Barhale supports Severn Trent’s Rapid Action Taskforce to tackle CSO spills

20th June 2025

Barhale has been proud to support Severn Trent on the Rapid Action Taskforce Spills (RATS) scheme, helping address Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) spills across the network with fast, reactive interventions.

The scheme, located in the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Worcestershire, with a value of over £570,000 sees Barhale and Severn Trent collaborate to quickly scope each site and implement bespoke solutions. At the heart of this programme is the installation of  Submerged Aerated Filter (SAF) and Terra Tanks – designed to temporarily store spilled water during heavy rainfall events, preventing discharges to the environment and instead returning flows back into the sewer system when capacity allows.

Each site (Baslow, Hathersage, Ashover, Bishampton, Long Whatton and South Wingfield) had:

  • New SAF or terra tank installations
  • High-capacity feed pumps
  • Control kiosks and ducting
  • Electrical works
  • Hardstanding construction

All locations had hardstanding installed, 1-3 SAF units, a kiosk, base pipework, pumps, ducting and duct boxes.

This essential work is part of our shared commitment with Severn Trent to reduce environmental impact and improve river water quality through innovative, rapid infrastructure solutions.
