Barhale Progresses Secondary Containment Works at Worcester STW

12th September 2025

We are proud to be delivering essential infrastructure for Severn Trent Water at Worcester Sewage Treatment Works, to ensure compliance with the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED).

The scope of works includes the supply, construction, installation, testing and commissioning of precast concrete block walls, HGV kerbing, road ramps, speed bumps, impermeable surfaces, actuated penstock valves and full telemetry integration and commissioning.

The objective of the project is to provide secondary containment for the anaerobic digestion process. This will prevent emissions to the ground and watercourses and help Severn Trent meet its statutory commitments across its 25 anaerobic digestion sites.

Our team has made steady progress, with 270 linear metres of wall bases and Legato blocks and 100 linear metres of HGV kerbs installed to date. The wall base installations have presented their own challenges – in one area more than twice the number of expected services were uncovered. Thanks to the construction team’s safe excavation and close collaboration with design company, Jacobs, the bases were redesigned and works continued safely.

This project represents a key step in Severn Trent Water’s commitment to environmental responsibility and regulatory compliance. Barhale is proud to contribute to such an important initiative, working collaboratively to overcome challenges and deliver high-quality, sustainable infrastructure. Drainage works in the northern section has allowed us to programme the next phase and maintain momentum on site. We look forward to sharing further progress as we continue to support Severn Trent in protecting our watercourses and communities.
