Protecting the River Wharfe: Delivering cleaner, safer bathing waters for Ilkley
29th September 2025We are pleased to announce the successful completion of a vital project delivered on behalf of Yorkshire Water to improve water quality in the River Wharf, supporting the designated inland bathing site at Ilkley. With the bathing season running from May to September, ensuring that water quality meets the required standards for safe public use was a key driver throughout the scheme.
The project set out to reduce the environmental impact of final effluent through enhanced UV disinfection across three key treatment sites—Grassington, Draughton and Beamsley, North Yorkshire.
Initially launched as an investigation contract, the scheme developed into full delivery with temporary UV dosing units installed in collaboration with Xylem. These were supported by temporary power supplies, pump systems, CCTV, fencing, and ecological assessments to ensure safe and effective operation. At Grassington, for example, two LBX850 UV units and duty/standby pumps were commissioned, alongside a new manhole chamber and stone hardstanding. Tailored installations were also delivered at Beamsley and Draughton, including LBX400 and LBX90 units respectively, with upgrades to power infrastructure and site access.
As the project progressed, Yorkshire Water committed up to £3 million to deliver permanent TAK UV units across all three sites. This phase involved extensive civil and MEICA works, including cable ducting, concrete bases, flow meter relocation and control kiosks. Saftronics supported delivery by manufacturing and installing the power incomer panels, distribution panels and compressor control systems required to operate the UV technology.
This completed scheme stands as a fantastic example of collaboration, innovation and investment coming together to protect our rivers and provide safe, clean bathing waters for the community.
