Future-proofing Ponden Pumping Station for Yorkshire Water
23rd October 2025
The Barhale Enpure Joint Venture has successfully completed upgrade works at Ponden Pumping Station on behalf of Yorkshire Water, delivering significant improvements to the site’s electrical, mechanical, and structural assets.
As part of the project, our team constructed a new Motor Control Centre (MCC) base and installed a new MCC kiosk. A modern intruder detection system was fitted within the kiosk and integrated with the existing system in the adjacent brick building, providing a secure and fully connected solution.
Mechanical upgrades included the replacement of two existing pumps and motors with new duty/standby variable speed pumps, each capable of delivering 52 l/s at a maximum reservoir drawdown of 11m. The installation also featured new inlet and outlet pipework with associated valves, surge protection and a replacement MCC with Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) housed within an air-conditioned external kiosk. To further support safe and reliable operation, a certified 1.5 T lifting beam and a new electrical isolation point were installed.
In addition to the mechanical and electrical improvements, Barhale carried out refurbishment works to the existing building. These included external rendering, removal of redundant windows, installation of new fascia boards, minor roof and pointing works and the fitting of SR4-rated security doors. We also upgraded the Ponden to Oldfield AUMA actuator to a modern equivalent, enhancing control and reliability across the system.
Through close collaboration with Yorkshire Water and a focus on quality and safety, Barhale successfully delivered a modernised and secure pumping station that supports the continued resilience and efficiency of the local water network.
