BarhaleEnpure JV completes works at Fixby WTW

30th October 2025

The BarhaleEnpure JV (BEJV), working for Yorkshire Water, has successfully completed major upgrade works at Fixby Water Treatment Works (WTW), which serves approximately 80,000 homes in Huddersfield.

The team’s hard work and combination of civils and MEICA capabilities, along with design work carried out by Barhale’s in-house designer ESL, saw enhancement at the front-end blending and dosing, improvements to the dissolved air flotation performance, enhanced Rapid Gravity Filter (RGF) treatment, installation of a replacement lime dosing system and installation of a new polyelectrolyte dosing system for both RGFs and supernatant return. Previously, the Fixby WTW site achieved a maximum throughput of circa 17 MLD, but following the upgrade/refurbishment undertaken by BEJV, the site is now capable of supplying in excess of 30 MLD of wholesome and compliant water to the local network.

Mixing arrangements were upgraded through new lime mixing tanks installed adjacent to the existing lime silos and new discharge/dosing arrangements were implemented to achieve the required water quality improvements. An overhaul of the redundant salt treatment building enabled new wet and dry polyelectrolyte (poly) rooms together with their dedicated Motor Control Centre (MCC) and new temperature control and heating/cooling systems were installed to help protect the process against the harsh, inclement weather that the treatment works experiences.

The site’s Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) plant has been improved (including changing DAF nozzles using Enpure’s patented dissolved air flotation headers and nozzle technology) along with upgrades to the six existing Rapid Gravity Filters to improve both clarified and filtered water quality. All structures were structurally assessed and repairs put in place as part of the overall upgrade.

Externally, new wash water rising mains were installed, access roads refurbished and building repairs undertaken to the roofs and windows.

Well done to the team for enabling the increase in resilience of water supplies from the Pennines, exceeding expectations of the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI).
