Environmental

Barhale subscribes to a philosophy which states that only the adoption of formal environmental management systems will ensure that our performance matches the expectations of our clients, stakeholders and the communities in which we work. To this end, Barhale achieved certification to BS EN ISO 14001 in October 2003 (as part of our integrated safety, environmental and quality management system) across all of our operations.

Our corporate aim is to pursue environmental benefits wherever possible. Our contribution to the environment is considerable, partly through the environmental improvement schemes undertaken on behalf of our clients. We are committed to sustainable development and the minimisation of negative environmental impacts in all our activities.

Continuous improvement is sought in our activities as they affect the environment. Adherence to statutory regulations is strictly enforced by all levels of management, and site managers in particular are encouraged to take a strong day to day interest in achieving our corporate environmental goals. These goals are to
  • Increase Awareness of Environmental Issues throughout the Company
  • Reduce Waste to final disposal
  • Increase Use of Recycled Materials
  • Minimise Pollution Incidents
  • Reduce Air Emissions
  • Increase company wide involvement in supporting the local community

Barhale in action

Environmental policy is set by the Board and individual business area senior managers are empowered to pursue improvements in performance and maintenance of our environmental accreditation.

Being a sustainable contractor means, among much else, seeking to control our significant environmental impacts. These may vary dependent on the specific type of work we undertake and its location but are associated with generation of waste, emissions to water, emissions to air, use of resources, nuisance and amenity, contamination of land, energy use, archaeology or local history and wildlife. Typical controls include minimising waste via recycling, reuse and re-circulation where possible. We also aim to minimise the need for removing wastes generated from our operations and office locations. Our clients expect us to always minimise the incidence of noise and dust and other nuisances to the public, and training is given to employees to ensure their awareness of the measures which need to be taken.
