Barhale has
given a new lease of life to a failing railway tunnel in mid Wales for Network
Rail.
The Rhosferig tunnel is in Mid
Wales on the Central Line, where work was carried out during a two week line
closure.
Tunnelling’s lining specialist George Slade said: “After
considering the stated requirement and scope of works we designed and built a
120-year design life structural concrete lining to act compositely with the
failing intrados.
“By pinning the brick arch rings together and applying a
pressure compacted concrete lining we were able to strengthen the structure and
prevent any further ring separation from occurring.
“Additional works included stabilisation of side walls,
crack stitching and installation of water membrane.”
The £375,000 contract, which was packaged with Builth Road
bridge reconstruction, is another shining example of Barhale’s ‘New for Old’
tunnel refurbishment service.
