Dennis Curran - Chairman

Dennis Curran is the Company's founder and majority shareholder.

Dennis adopted his current role following the appointment of Mark Cutler as Chief Executive in 2010.

After starting his career as a tunneller, Dennis founded Barhale as a specialist tunnelling contractor in 1980 and has grown the company into one of the leading privately owned civil engineering businesses in the UK.





Mark Cutler -   Chief Executive

Mark Cutler was appointed in August 2010.

Mark is responsible for the strategic and day-to-day running of the Company. His priority is to develop the business in existing and new markets, while maintaining Barhale's strong cultural and performance characteristics.

A Chartered Civil Engineer, Mark has a wide range of experience across the UK's infrastructure sectors having spent his early career with Tarmac Construction and held senior positions at Carillion and laterally as Group Managing Director of Morgan Est.




Andy Flowerday - Executive Director

Andy Flowerday is an Executive Director and was appointed to the Board in 1991.

Andy is responsible for a portfolio of business units (including tunnelling) and the wider water sector for Barhale.

Andy joined Barhale in 1981 after spells with Nuttall and John Mowlem.  Trained as a Civil Engineer, Andy has been instrumental in developing Barhale as a sustainable civil engineering business



John Ellis - Finance Director

John Ellis was appointed to the Board as an Executive Director in August 2011.

John is responsible for a range of areas, including Finance, IT, Human Resources, Supply Chain, BCS and Barhale Training Solutions.

A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered and Certified Accountants, John joined the company following spells with GEC, BTR, T&N, Alstom, LDV and Morgan Est.






James Measures -  Non-Executive Director

James Measures was appointed to the Board as a Non-Executive Director in July 2009.

James, a Chartered Civil Engineer with 40 years’ experience in the construction industry, started his career in local government, before joining the private sector in 1980 with Mouchel where he ultimately served on the Group Management Board until 2008.  

James chairs the Remuneration Committee.






Patrick Curran -  Non-Executive Director

Patrick Curran was appointed to the Board as a Non-Executive Director in 2009.

Patrick has a background in human resources and recruitment, as well as property development.







Anthony Sheppard - Company Secretary

Anthony Sheppard has been associated with Barhale since it was founded and serves as the Company Secretary.

As a qualified solicitor he advises on legal issues and chairs the Risk and Audit Committee.





Other members of the Executive Management Team

Iain Sutherland – Strategy Director

Iain Sutherland joined Barhale in February 2012.

Iain is chair of Barhale WSP JV Board and leads Barhale’s AMP6 planning and diversification strategy.

Iain is a Chartered Civil Engineer with extensive experience in the water, waste and highways sectors for such companies as Morgan Est, Accord Highways, Balfour Beatty and began his career as a Graduate Engineer with Costain





Ian Bailey – Southern Director

Ian Bailey was appointed in February 2011.

Ian is responsible for the Southern Business Units including the delivery support to our Optimise and BTU joint ventures. 

A Chartered Civil Engineer, Ian has a wide range of experience across the UK’s rail and infrastructure sectors having previously worked for British Rail and Carillion







John McHugh – Production Director

John’s responsibilities are for operational support throughout the company, coordinating labour, plant and supporting the delivery of projects. John has a wealth of experience in the construction industry having started his career with Barhale in 1982 as a Banksman.  John worked his way up through the ranks including Miner, Leading Miner, Pit Boss and Operations Manager and in 2009 became Production Director.







Mark Millington – Technical Services Director

Mark Millington was appointed in 2011.

As Technical Services Director, Mark has company-wide responsibility for Engineering, HSQE and Business Development.

Mark is a Chartered Civil Engineer.  Mark has previously worked in similar executive level positions for Carillion and Morgan Est






Nick Dickens – Commercial and Estimating Director

Nick Dickens was appointed in 2006.

Nick is responsible for all Commercial and Estimating activities throughout the company with the objective of securing profitable work and delivering sustainable margins.

Nick is a Chartered Civil Engineer with a wide range of experience within the water and infrastructure sectors, having previously worked for Tilbury Douglas and Mowlem







Paul Underwood – Business Improvement Director

Paul Underwood was appointed in 2012.

Paul is responsible for our customer, innovation, project management and efficiency improvement activities across Barhale and provides support to our clients in delivering improvement initiatives. 

Paul has worked in the construction, oil and gas, manufacturing and telecoms sectors delivering various business and systems improvement programmes, most recently as Regional Director at PwC.

Paul is a Chartered Accountant with an MBA and is an accredited project manager, Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and Chartered Quality professional.
